Eisenwurzen is located in a longtime steel-factory region between Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Styria. The film is an insight into the folk music of the Eisenwurzen region, people singing and stamping, so telling the history of the legends and plagues of the Austrian Eisenstrasse (“Iron Route”), almost a western musical and an echo off the collective history. The heroes and heroines - all musicians - are miners, charcoal burners, mountain farmers, hunters and factory workers. With the strange musicality of their voices they create, within a meteorological as well as social politically rough climate, a spare hymn on an already historical worker's society. In their songs, they sing the Eisenwurzen Blues and at the same time its avantgardistic arrival in the contemporary song tradition. An un-heard-of „Heimat“ and art film this stupefying and very carefully executed portrait of the Eisenwurzen region goes against all our traditional visual expectations. Folksongs off the pop charts – an eye- and ear pleasing and truly modern musical! |
